Trojans coach Corday looks to step down
Mark Trott could replace Michael Corday as Somerset Trojans’ coach for next season.Due to growing personal commitments, former Trojans winger Corday is unable to fully commit to the role and has already suggested to the club’s management that he be replaced by Trott for the upcoming campaign.“I have already told the club and discussed this possibility with them,” Corday told The Royal Gazette. “Mark assisted me last year and has done a very good job and I think this is the logical next step.“I am extremely busy and not sure if I can afford the time so I’m taking a back seat. Right now the club needs someone full-time that can give them 100 percent of their time and it’s only fair we take this route.“If I can’t commit 100 percent to the job then I don’t want to cheat the players. I think Mark will take the helm and I will assist wherever I can. I’m always around and Mark knows he can call me whenever he wants and if I’m available then I will be there.”Trojans impressed during their first season back in the Premier Division last term. The former powerhouse finished runners-up behind North Village Rams in the Friendship Trophy and placed sixth in the top flight.Along with PHC Zebras, Trojans had the second best scoring record in the league (43). But the team’s porous defence leaked 42 goals, the second worst record behind relegated Boulevard Blazers (48).However, Trojans have solidified their defence by picking up a number of high-profile defenders during the transfer period.Joining the ranks are Tyrell Burgess from Rams, Ijahmon Mallory from Southampton Rangers and Somerset Eagles’ pair Adolphus Lambert and Dion Woolridge.“If you look at last year, defensively, we weren’t one of the better teams in the league,” Corday said. “We only had a certain amount of defenders to choose from and sometimes we were making midfielders into defenders, which doesn’t always go over too well.“But this year with the addition of the defensive players we should be a much stronger team and have more depth as well.”Corday has high expectations for a player of Burgess’ calibre.“Tyrell is a very good player who brings some experience to the table we may have been lacking,” he said. “He’s a quality player and we are certainly looking for good things from him.”Others joining the ranks at Somerset are Devonshire Cougars’ Sean Brangman, former Island Rangers forward Henry Santucci while returning for another stint with the club is goalkeeper Adrian Burrows who has severed ties with Rangers.“We needed some quality players that can bring more depth to the team than we had last year,” he said. “I think the one thing you require to be in contention for anything in the Premier Division is depth, and last year we just didn’t have that type of depth even though the boys did extremely well.”Given the blend of youth and experience at Trojans’ disposal, Corday envisions a promising future for the West End club.“If you look at the amount of quality, young players we have, the future looks extremely bright at Somerset. I think we have laid a very good foundation and now we can only go from strength to strength.”
