Tucker double sends Lions packing
Paget Lions 0
Somerset Eagles 3
An inspired performance by teenaged forward Troy Tucker powered unbeaten Somerset Eagles through to the next round of the FA Cup at White Hill Field yesterday.
Tucker, one of three 16-year-olds in his team's line-up, scored a brace either side of Roger Lee's strike right on the hour as Eagles outclassed a scrappy Lions side.
Had it not been for profligacy in front of goal Eagles could have easily won by a wider margin of victory.
The boys from White Hill had six golden opportunities to break the deadlock during the opening stanza but for all their superiority Eagles - who rested key cogs Marlon Rojas and Darin Dowling on the bench - had absolutely nothing to show for their efforts at half-time.
Lee was the first to test Paget 'keeper Paulo Vicente who barely got his fingertips to the ball, diving low to his left.
Moments later Lee aimed his shot right into the 'keeper's arms after the resourceful Adolphus Lambert burst down the left-flank and swung the ball back to his unmarked team-mate.
Eagles lost elder statesman Anthony Webb midway through the half with a groin injury.
But his departure did little to offset his team's tempo as defender Tyone Fubler had a back post header roll untouched across the goalmouth and then in-form striker Rodre (Rodigan) Wilson had a well-driven shot scrambled off the line by the quick-thinking Andre Bean.
Kieran Evans, who came on or the injured Webb, also had a header saved by Vicente whose alertness between the posts kept his team in contention at the half. Paget did manage to create anxiety in the Eagles defence with the pace of forwards Damon Morris and Rayki Emery.
On a mazy run down the left-side Morris left two defenders in his wake, but could only watch in disbelief as his well-measured cross rolled completely untouched across the goalmouth.
Bean then brought off a fine save from Eagles' goalie Lorenzo Lambert who dove full-length to push Bean's wind-assisted free-kick around the post.
A brief clash among a small pocket of fans held up the resumption of play for several minutes before order was eventually restored long before Police arrived on the scene.
It was always just a matter of time before Eagles made the breakthrough and in the 48th minute Tucker headed home Wilson's cross. Wilson also had a say in his team's second goal as his initial left-footed cross was knocked down by Evans in the box for the onrushing Lee to slam the ball into the net through a forest of legs.
Tucker then put the match way beyond doubt with a low drive that skidded past Vicente after Wilson missed a sitter and sub Giovan Logie - son of national cricket coach Gus Logie - made a mess of a breakaway.
