Bermuda's first ever 'professional' league took its first major step towards becoming a reality on Saturday night when 120 local footballers were signed up during the Island Soccer League's 'Superdraft'.

The eight-team, six-a-side tournament gets underway in May, with games on a reduced size pitch taking place every Friday and Saturday night at the National Sports Centre.

While the league has been labelled as professional by its creator, indoor football stalwart David Bascome, in reality the players — drawn from all of the Island's 11-a-side leagues — will not be paid a salary.

They will be competing for prize money, however, with the most successful expected to earn somewhere in the region of $2,000 for their efforts over the summer.

After months of preparation, the eight team coaches were able to select their sides at a special draft ceremony at the Spinning Wheel Nightclub over the weekend.
