The United States Consulate and the Bermuda National Library will celebrate LGBTI Pride Month by screening a documentary about a pro-gay demonstration from 1969.

The American Experience show Stonewall Uprising will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a three-day protest by members of the LGBT community after a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan in June, 1969.

It features interviews with people who took part in the protest, which led to a worldwide human rights movement that remains active today.

A spokeswoman for the US Consulate said: “Pride Month is celebrated in countries all over the world throughout the month of June where communities advocate for promoting, protecting and advancing human rights, including the rights and inclusion of the LGBTI community.”

The documentary will be shown at the National Library on Tuesday, at 6pm.

Admission is free but entry will be on a first-come, first-served basis because of limited seats.
