Husband tells court he found man in bedroom with his wife
A man accused of chopping his wife's lover told Supreme Court he was living in the family home despite allegations by the lover to the contrary.
Thisley "Thunder" Dawson said he was occasionally living there, and would give his wife Ceblle Dawson $800 a week towards rent and bills.
He said he spent some time at his brother's house in Southampton.
He said his wife wanted to become a Police officer and told him she needed time on her own to study.
Dawson denies wounding Gregory Campbell with intent to cause grievous bodily harm through chopping him with a kitchen knife.
Mr. Campbell told the court on Tuesday that he had been in the apartment many times "all night, all day" and never saw the defendant.
He claims Dawson chopped him with a knife "almost twelve inches long" after breaking into the house around 10.45 p.m. on May 25, 2009. Mr. Campbell said he ran out into the yard while Mrs. Dawson hid with her children in the house. However, he said, Dawson chased him outside where he then chopped him multiple times with a knife, leaving him with wounds to his head, arm and hand.
Yesterday Dawson told the court he met his wife in 2006 and they married on July 4, 2007. The 42-year-old said the relationship was "going fine" and that he often stayed home with her two children at night while she worked, although he also said the relationship had its ups and downs.
On the day of the incident he said he watched the Bermuda Day Parade on Front Street with the family and then went to a family gathering in Southampton.
Dawson said his wife left early and he caught the 10.45 p.m. bus home.
"I took my keys, open the door and go inside the house and the washroom then the kitchen then the dining, the living and go into the bedroom," he said.
"When I go in there, I saw this man inside my house in my room. I turned on my light when I got inside my bedroom. When I go in there, I saw this man in there with my wife. I said to him, 'who is it?' Him don't answer."
He continued: "I rushed towards him and I ran and jump up and come back through the living room, the dining, and when we reached by the kitchen, I stepped down from the dining [room]. He pushed me down on the kitchen counter and tried to get outside and I rushed in the kitchen drawer.
"I got out my knife and I rushed outside. We started fighting and him hit me right across my face with a rock but it never hurt. He got away and ran."
Dawson said the Police came a few minutes later and he was arrested.
Asked by his lawyer Kenrick James how he felt when he found Mr. Campbell in his bed, Dawson said: "I was shocked that I say 'wait, I am not supposed to see him in my house'.
"I was feeling really hurt because I never expected to find a man inside my house."
The defendant told the court he had never seen Mr. Campbell before and didn't know him.
He also denied he stabbed or chopped Mr. Campbell. He said the blood must have been from the fight.
Crown counsel Maria Sofianos quizzed Dawson on if he knew Mrs. Dawson had another relationship.
"Did you have suspicions that your wife was seeing someone else?" she asked.
The defendant replied: "I don't know [because] she will tell me she wasn't seeing anyone else. I asked her, because she was going to work every night, and I said 'let me see your paycheque' and she refused to show me. She put her clothes on for work and I called the Police and they said she's not going to work."
The trial continues.
