Waldron and Haynes shine as Cavaliers snatch Trophy

By Ivan CliffordRicardo Waldron smashed an unbeaten century and pacer Trevor Haynes held his nerve at the death as Spring Garden Cavaliers defeated Forties by five runs in an absorbing Memorial Trophy match, the Commercial Cricket League’s traditional season opener at Shelly Bay.Forties began the final over needing seven runs to overhaul Cavaliers’ 254 for seven but Haynes bowled skipper Gordon Campbell with his first ball and then conceded just a single from the next five as Cavaliers drew first blood in the new campaign following their unprecedented clean sweep of last season’s four major trophies.Winning skipper Dave Greenidge said: “It was a great way to start the 2012 season. The game was very competitive and nail-biting until the last over bowled by Trevor Haynes.“If the Memorial game is an indication of the type of season the Commercial League will experience, then it will be an exceptional season.”Forties, who won the toss, had Cavaliers in deep trouble at 99 for six in Sunday’s 40-overs-a-side match in which bowlers were limited to five overs apiece but number five Waldron rescued his side, teaming up with Rohan Henry (20) to add 95 for the seventh wicket and 60 in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Lloyd Morrison (18 not out).Waldron’s unbeaten 125 from 92 balls included 17 fours and a six.Left-arm bowler David DeSilva was the pick of the Forties attack, taking two for 18. His son Edward bagged two for 37 while Campbell chipped in with two for 32.In reply, newcomer Zacc Rodwell and Simon Jones gave Forties a fine start, adding 89 for the first wicket. Rodwell made a patient 33 from 68 balls while Jones, who struck six fours in his 57-ball knock, made 52, continuing his prolific form from last season.Yatin Gawas (39 from 32 balls), Edward DeSilva (32 from 29) and David DeSilva (31 from 25) kept Forties in the hunt for revenge over their rivals, who won last season’s Memorial before marching on to the league, Twenty20 and knockout titles. But Haynes, who earlier made 23, had the final say, finishing with three for 29, while Henry was equally effective, taking three for 31 as Forties closed on 249 for seven.Skipper Campbell said: “At 99 for six we should have had them but Waldron found willing partners, first with Rohan Henry and then with LLoyd Morrison.“Ricardo really teed off on our later bowlers. He was dropped a couple of times before 50 but afterwards was chanceless.”He added: “Zacc and Simon gave us a great start and everyone chipped in along the way. We required seven to win off the last over and I was bowled first ball of the over like a rookie going for the big one.“Trevor held his nerve, bowling an excellent final over, giving up only one run.“If this match is anything to go by then it should be an interesting season.”The league programme will start on May 20.Five teams make up the league. Devonshire Stars, who competed as BC Allrounders the last five years, have reverted to their former name.
