Rangers title challenge runs aground

Key West Rangers are seeing double after their challenge to Robin Hood for supremacy in the Commercial League A Division has run aground in the past fortnight.

Ideally placed to go top with Hood idle on January 5, Rangers were stunned by Cable & Wireless’ late show in a 5-3 defeat and on Saturday they were beaten 5-1 by North Village Rams, who just happen to be sponsored by the telecommunications giant.

Although Hood were held to a 1-1 draw by BAA Wanderers, Rangers now have to make up four points as they slipped to third place.

Damon Wade’s fine finish put Village ahead in the 22nd minute and Ricky Hill scored six minutes before the half to give them a grip on proceedings. Maceo Dill made it 3-0 in the 50th minute before Sergio Griffin gave Key West belated hope with an 80th-minute strike.

But Craig Tyrrell, a second-half substitute who was making only his second appearance for Village after transferring from Cable & Wireless, made the result certain with goals in the 84th and 88th minutes.

Derek Stapley’s rare entry into the goal-scoring column was much-needed for Hood as they came from behind to snatch a point against the Wanderers. Gary Wilson put BAA ahead after 16 minutes and the lead held up until 20 minutes into the second half, when Stapley pounced.

On a day of shocking results, Vasco Mariners recorded only their second win of the campaign, 1-0 away to Tuff Dogs. José Barroso netted for Vasco after 12 minutes.

The remaining match saw Lobster Pot end a poor recent run with a scoreless draw at home to MR Onions, who went second on goal difference with the point.

In the B Division, the top two — St. George’s All-Stars and Prison Officers — opened a gap on the chasing pack, but Prospect/Fire received a dousing in the form of a 6-1 beating administered by Devonshire Colts All-Stars.

Kenny Dill, president of Devonshire Colts, provided a lesson in the art of finishing to his senior team, with four goals against the division’s third-placed team.

Dill netted in the third, 25th, 59th and 69th minutes for All-Stars, who did the double over Prospect/Fire and moved up two places to sixth with the win. Germano Bothelo (28th) and Dwayne Cox (86th) completed the scoring for All-Stars while Dean Martin mustered the only response for Prospect/Fire in the 29th minute.

St. George’s All-Stars, the leaders, showed tremendous character in a 4-2 come-from-behind victory away to Valley International.

Valley were two up within 10 minutes after Kevin Isaac netted in the fourth and ninth minutes, but the east enders hit back through Cal Rayner on the half-hour before completing the comeback in the second half through Lionel Cann (68th), Jan Cieters (71st) and Terence Carlington (86th).

Prison Officers put an improving Bermuda Pest Control in their place with a 5-2 victory at Malabar Field. Dwight Richards was the chief marksman with three goals while Millard Rawlins and Marvin Trott netted one apiece. Ernest Spence and Chris Davis were on target for Pest Control.

Devonshire Lions avenged an early-season thrashing at the hands of Somerset Extros with a 5-0 victory at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Arthur Sinclair gave Lions a two-goal lead by half-time with strikes in the 22nd and 40th minutes. Lions then piled on the agony for Extros, who ran the risk of being thrown out of the league had they not shown for the third time this season, with Kevin Hodgson scoring in the 51st minute, Kevin DeShields in the 73rd and Dapo Frederick in the 86th.

The remaining match saw Dockyard Falcons edge Wolves Pack, shockingly by the odd goal in 11!

Given that their previous match yielded 14 goals with Wolves hitting nine before the points were awarded to Falcons because of the use of ineligible players, the scoring-fest was perhaps unsurprising.

Junior DeSilva led the Dockyard side with three goals with David Tear, Stephen Bremar and a Kevin Goater own goal accounting for the others. Casey Burgess scored a hat-trick for Wolves and Danny Stovell had the other two.

[bul] Terry-Lynn Williams scored the lone goal to help Prospect beat Robin Hood 1-0 on Sunday and move into third place in the Women’s League.
