Davidge tops West in junior golf event

Robert Spurling and David James fought it out in the Group IV section in Saturday's junior competition at St. George's Golf Club with Spurling firing a 68 to edge James by one stroke with Justin Barritt a further two shots adrift.

B.J. Payne shot a fine round of 71 to prevail in Group III. He won over Chris Tully who finished on 75 and Jeremy Drover and Patrick Graham on 78.

Chris Smith led Group II with a 72 and he was followed closely by Charles Markey on 74 and O.J. Pitcher on 76.

Group I play saw Ryan Davidge shoot an 82 to defeat Eric West by one shot with Chris Brough in third spot a further shot back.

A four ball, best ball was also held with the scores being very close as the Bruce team of James, David, Andy and father Trevor shot an unbelievable score of 21-under par to win on retrogression over the team of Ryan Davidge, Anthony Smith, Douglas Markey and Eric West.

One shot behind were the teams of Aaron Burrows, Mark Robinson, Chris Brought and Andrew Borland and Jeremy Drover, Patrick Graham, B.J. Payne and Neil Fenton.

An intriguing final has been set for the Ocean View Club Championship on Sunday, with Leroy Burch and Bill Pitt to square off over 36 holes.

Burch earned his way to the last two of the match play event by defeating last year's winner Claude James, while Pitt ousted Zane DeSilva in the other semi-final.

The championship consolation also has an interesting pairing, as Rudy Cann takes on Kenny Bean.

Meanwhile, the women -- using the stroke play format -- will also have their champion crowned on Sunday.

Pat Morgan, already possessing a 14 stroke lead over nearest rival Dawnette Caisey, will find it hard not to win.

After three rounds Morgan stands at 245, compared to 259 for Caisey, while Noriette Fox and Louise Payne stand even further back.

Play begins at 8 a.m. with the men squaring off. The first group of women tee of at 8.40 a.m.

Entries are now being accepted for the Third Annual Ross (Blackie) Talbot Invitational Charity tournament to be held on April 5 at Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club.

Those interested have until March 29 to enter the competition, which this year has a target of $10,000 set for raising funds to benefit Summerhaven.

Last year saw $2,500 handed over to the home for the handicapped and organiser Clem Talbot, son of the well known musician, was hoping to be able to quadruple that figure.

Tee times and teams will be announced later.

Just a few vacancies remain for the Bermuda Golf Association (BGA) Mixed Twosomes Championship to be held on April 1 and 2 at St. George's Golf Club.

Those wishing to submit entry forms -- along with a fee of $130 -- should call BGA secretary Tom Smith at 238-1367 to arrange delivery of the forms.

TENNIS TEN The National Trust will once again be putting on its annual Calcutta tournament from March 29 to April 2.

The event is to be hosted by the Coral Beach and Tennis Club and is open to anyone wishing to raise money for the Trust...and possibly make some for themselves.

A standard format will be followed, with events consisting of men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. However, there is a twist as all of the teams will be randomly paired.

Four teams in each division will be seeded, as selected by the tournament committee.

In addition the aforementioned four will go up for auction to the highest bidder prior to the tournament, while unseeded teams and those eliminated after the first round become available for a silent auction.

Application forms are available at the National Trust (Waterville), the Coral Beach tennis shop and the Tennis Stadium at a cost of $100 for a single event and $150 for two events. Forms must be in by noon on March 27.

SOCCER SOC The Shield semi-final replay between Prospect and Somerset Eagles is scheduled for PHC Stadium on Tuesday night at 8.00.

Meanwhile, the new date for the Commercial League Cup finals is on April 1 at White Hill field. The matches, which were postponed last night, will see Lobster Pot playing St. George's All-Stars in the group B final at 1.00 and Island Rangers meeting BAA Wanderers in the group A final at 3.00.

The Alliance and Commercial knockout finals are also scheduled for April 1 at Bernard Park when Devonshire Colts meet PHC and North Village Rams take on Robin Hood.

The women's FA Cup final will take place on Saturday at PHC Stadium at 8.00 between BAA Telecom and Dandy Stars. A total of six junior knockout finals are also scheduled for Saturday at Bernard Park, from the Mini Minors to Bantams, starting at 9.00 a.m.

The Minor (upper division) final between North Village and Devonshire Colts will precede the women's final at PHC Stadium starting at 6.00.

DARTS DRT The Bermuda Darts Association have named a team to play against a pick of the West End at Sandys Sports Club on Saturday, starting at 8.30.

The team is as follows: Jimmy Pratt, Vernon Daniels, Greger McQueen, Steven Hayward, Charles Roberts, Reggie Cabral, John Holder, Robert Percy, Norman Kromer, Danny Ray, Scott Corday, Robert Davis, Gavin Corcoran, Frank Brewster, Keith Levell, Terry Cartwright, Brenda Hutton, Elizabeth Simons, Dawn Bealing, Jean Clark and Norma-Lynn Showers.

Anyone unable to play is asked to contact Elizabeth Simons at 292-4519.

League members are reminded that the Open Doubles tournament will take place on Monday, March 27 at Vasco, starting at 8.30 p.m., and the entry fee is $5.

The defending champions are Greger McQueen and Wayne Harvey.

CHESS CHS Kingfishers increased their lead atop the teams tournament following a 31 -11 victory over Bishops in latest chess action.

The leaders now stand at 15 points after four rounds, 31 points ahead of second placed Independents (111 ).

Meanwhile, Independents were held to a 21 -21 tie by Islanders in the other match played.

ROAD RUNNING RUN Entry forms for Sunday's Evian 10 Mile Race are now available at Sportseller and New Winners Edge.

Entries close tomorrow at 5 p.m., although late entries -- with a fee of $15 -- will be accepted on race day.
