Corporation of Hamilton moves to solar power
Solar panels could be installed on more buildings across the City of Hamilton.
A project to put 210 solar panels at the City’s work depot on Laffan Street is nearing completion ahead of deadline.
Now, the City says it is considering similar options at the Bull’s Head car park, the sewage pumping station and Pier Six on Front Street.
Ian Hind, the city’s senior engineer, said Bull’s Head had long been under consideration, but warned: “If we fill the Bull’s Head car park with solar panels, it would generate more power than we could use.”
Mr Hind said one option would be to connect the solar system at the car park to City Hall, but the distance would make it expensive.
Installation at Laffan Street started late last year and was expected to be completed in May.
Mr Hind said now it could be finished before the end of April. Electrical works are expected to be done over the next few weeks.
Mr Hind said last month that the solar system would generate up to 103,846 kilowatt-hours of electricity and save about $37,700 a year on electricity bills.
He said the depot, which houses the departments of engineering and human resources, was a big user of electricity and would use up all the electricity generated from the solar system.
The solar panels are expected to last for the next 30 years with the reduction in bills over the first 7½ expected to cover the $286,000 cost of the project.
