A kite designing contest has been launched to decorate the new terminal of LF Wade International Airport.

The contest, held by Aecon Group Inc and Bermuda Skyport Corporation Ltd, called for community members to submit drawn designs.

Ten winners will receive $250 and have their designs made into kites that will be suspended from the ceiling of the new terminal.

A spokesman for Aecon said: “We would like to encourage anyone with an interest in Bermuda kites and art to enter this competition.

“This is a great opportunity to be artistic and imaginative and have your work shown to the millions of people who will pass through the new terminal.”

The contest will be split into categories of children 12 and under, teenagers aged 13 to 18, and adults 19 and over.

Designs must be based off of a hexagonal, octagonal and decagonal kite shape, and cannot have words, political references, or a human likeness to them.

Physical kites cannot be submitted.

Submissions will be accepted until March 31 and the winners will be announced on April 15.

Designs will be judged by Colin Campbell of OBM International; Karla Lacey of the BTA; Dr. Kim Dismont-Robinson, Government’s Folklife Officer; kite master Eugene O’Connor and Alan Daniels of Kite Warriors.

A spokeswoman for Skyport said: “We want to ensure the new terminal of the LF Wade International Airport feels Bermudian inside and out. One of the ways to achieve this is by incorporating Bermudian elements to the interior design.

“Kites are a big part of our culture and we look forward to seeing creative, colourful and impressive designs.”

Hard copies can be delivered to Colin Campbell at OBM International in the Woodbourne Hall Building in the City of Hamilton.
