Social media helps identify avocado thief

A man was fined $300 on Friday after he admitted to trespassing and the theft of avocados.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Jevon Bean, 45, was seen by a neighbour to enter the grounds of Caroline Rance’s home, where he picked the fruit from a tree.

Bean told the neighbour: “I was picking them for her. I’ll leave some on her porch.”

The neighbour alerted Ms Rance to the incident after she returned home from work and later found an image of the thief on security cameras.

She posted an image of the man on social media and Bean was identified. The incident occurred on October 16 of last year.

Bean, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty to the offences.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered Bean to pay the fine by February 25.
