On a morning when blustery winds from an overnight storm were still buffeting Island, Stephen Allen and Tamika Williams managed to run like the wind to win the men’s and women’s respective titles in the 11th Annual Eye Classic 5K road race.The windy conditions proved to be more of a hindrance than a help, but both runners made the best of things and stamped their authority on the two-lap race in St George’s today.Allen powered to overall victory in 16 minutes and eight seconds, more than a minute ahead of nearest rival Tucker Murphy.“The wind was really pushing on us,” said Allen, who believes he could have produced a sub-16 minute time on a more settled day. His best for the distance is 15.48.“I was just concentrating on my own race the whole way. I’m pleased with my performance.”Murphy, who represented Bermuda as a cross country skier in the 2010 Winter Olympics, was next across the finish line in 17.24, followed by 16-year-old Daniel Oatley in 18.19.In the women’s race Williams showed she is in good racing shape, despite this being her first road race outing since early February. She came home first with a comfortable lead, finishing 10th overall in a race field of 81 finishers.Williams had a solid cross country season and raced in February’s Butterfield & Vallis 5K before taking a break. Describing her race, she said: “It felt like a training run, then I picked up the pace.”Looking ahead, Williams said: “I’m going to return to the track soon and I would like to compete in some CAC [Caribbean Athletics Confederation] events this summer.”Second in the women’s race was Shona Palmer in 21.11, followed by Stepanka Sprincova in 21.29.In a juniors’ race, held before the main event, Jayden Ming was first in 10.36 followed by first girl Lynsey Palmer one second behind in 10.37. Third place runner was Iziah Tucker in 10.44 ahead of second girl Messiah Greaves in 11.24.Caleb Jn-Pierre was the quickest in the competitive race walk, winning in 32.25 from Gary Young (36.51) and Ray Medeiros (37.03). First woman was Sheena Young in 39.42, ahead of Gilda Cann (40.10) and Lovette Tannock (44.33).
