Murder accused Leroy Symons told Police his half brother Ronniko Burchall confessed to shooting Shane Minors.Mr Minors, 30, was fatally shot on December 17, 2009, in a stairwell leading to his lower floor apartment on South Terrace, Pembroke.Mr Burchall, 22, and Mr Symons, 21, have both been charged with his murder. Mr Burchall also faces an additional charge of using a firearm to commit the offence of murder. Both men have pleaded not guilty to all charges.Yesterday, the jury was shown video recordings of two police interviews with Mr Symons, recorded weeks after the killing. In the first interview on January 3, 2010, My Symons told police that he heard the gunshots while leaving the house of his child’s mother on the night of the murder, but denied any further knowledge of the shooting. However three days later, on January 6, Mr Symons returned to the police of his own free will to give a second statement, in which he said Mr Burchall, his half brother, had confessed to the killing.“The night Shane was murdered, before he was murdered, between 10 and 11pm my brother came walking toward Middle Terrace,” Mr Symons told officers.“He came to me and asked me what is the back way to my baby mama’s that takes you to [Shaki Minors’] yard.”He said that Mr Burchall also showed him a gun, a silver or grey 9mm, and that My Symons had advised him to keep the safety on.The day after the shooting, he said Mr Burchall approached him again, admitting that he had shot Mr Minors.“He said he saw him get out of the car and walk downstairs to a little apartment or whatever. He was going downstairs and he shot him.”Mr Symons said that the killing was both a way for Mr Burchall to make a name for himself in the Parkside gang, and an attempt to avenge the death of Gary ‘Fingaz’ Cann, a childhood friend who was killed a few nights prior.Asked why he was telling police, he said: “People do know that Ronniko did do that, and yesterday he pulled a gun on my baby mama over this shooting.“My family is at risk over his dumb risks and his foolishness and him trying to fit in with something that he’s not. He did this not thinking about his brother and his brother’s new born baby.”After the tapes had ended, defence lawyer Shade Subair, representing Mr Symons, questioned DC Leroy Mathurin about the circumstances surrounding the interview. She asked if he was aware that Mr Symons was working with police as an informant, and if he had seen Mr Symons around the Unit’s headquarters. DC Mathurin responded that he had seen Mr Symons “more than twice” at the headquarters, and that he knew very little about the investigation other than being involved in the interview.Ms Subair asked: “As a member of the Serious Crimes Unit and as a team member on this investigation you know that Leroy Symons was working with the Serious Crime Unit and assisting them on this case?”Mr Mathurin responded: “That is incorrect.”Mr Minors was not believed to be involved in gang activity, but his brother Shaki Minors was reportedly connected to the 42 gang. Also taking to the stand yesterday was Mr Minors’ cousin Demani Burchall who told the court he had gone out drinking with Mr Minors, Ed Wolffe and Annon Smith the night the shooting took place. He said after returning home, he and Mr Minors rested in Mr Smith’s car for more than an hour before Mr Minors decided to go inside.A short while later, he said he heard a gunshot. He said when he looked around the area he didn’t see anything, so he returned to sleep. The next morning, he went to Mr Minors’ apartment and discovered his body at the bottom of the stairs.“I knew it when I touched his hand. I didn’t know he got shot, I thought he fell down his steps,” he said. “I felt the cold. No life.”The trial is scheduled to continue this morning
