Police warning over shopping scams
The Bermuda Police Service issued a warning reminding online shoppers to be cautious of unknown sellers offering merchandise.
Caution should also be extended to companies offering gifts and anyone requesting payments through a free e-mail address such as Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook.
The warning was issued after two scams involving the selling of a smart TV and a laptop were reported to the police.
The alleged seller of the TV requested payment through the transfer company MoneyGram, while the laptop was offered in exchange for iTunes gift cards.
A spokesman for the BPS said that con artists frequent local ‘.bm’ and ‘.com’ websites, and that these websites that carry classified advertisements already display a warning.
Any incidents of suspected internet fraud are asked to be reported to the Financial Crime Unit at 247-1757, or via e-mail at fraud2@bps.bm.
