A Sandys teen was today fined $2,000 for taking part in a fight at St George’s Cricket Club on the last day of Cup Match.

Jomari Gooden at an earlier appearance in Magistrates’ Court denied a charge of affray but changed his plea to guilty this morning.

The court heard that police obtained video footage of the brawl that showed the 18-year-old repeatedly punching Zachary Fox.

He was also seen attacking an unknown male and another video showed him kicking and hitting Mr Fox.

When arrested, Gooden told officers: “Yes, I was fighting. I wasn’t going to let guys attack me.”

During a police interview, he added that he had gone to the game with his cousin and the fight started when someone snatched his chain.

The incident happened at around 6.20pm on August 4 and three other men, including Mr Fox, have been charged with taking part in the fight.

In court today, lawyer Kamal Worrell requested pre-sentencing reports and suggested a conditional discharge.

But magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said the “animalistic” nature of Gooden’s actions could not be ignored and that a conditional discharge would not be appropriate.

He added that Gooden would “likely” be convicted anyway. Mr Worrell said his client, who also apologised, would accept a fine.

Mr Fox, 19, and Cameron Clacker, 17, denied charges of affray when they appeared in court on August 7.

And Khalif Williams, 20, also pleaded not guilty to taking part in the fight when he was charged yesterday.

They are expected to return to court later this month.
