Jamaicans confident ahead of semi-final

Jamaican Association, who ended Spring Garden Cavaliers' dreams of an unprecedented sweep of the Commercial Cricket League's three main trophies, face their Caribbean rivals for the fourth time this season when they meet in tomorrow's semi-finals of the Knockout Cup.

Cavaliers clinched their first league title but lost to the Jamaicans by four wickets with two balls remaining in the final of the Twenty20 League Cup final earlier this month – and the Jamaicans are quietly confident of further success.

"We're not at full strength, but I'm ready. We haven't lost to Cavaliers this season," said Jamaican Association manager Glenmore Barrett whose side held on to secure losing draws in both league matches.

Cavaliers are still missing a number of key players who are away on holiday, including Trevor Haynes and Steve Diamond.

"We'll still try to field a decent team," said club spokesman Barry Richards.

"We are struggling in the bowling department and our opening batsmen (Jeff DeSilva and Donovan Livingston) haven't had any form recently. Hopefully, they come good this weekend."

The clubs, who meet at Warren Simmons Community Field, hope to squeeze in their annual Caribbean Cup before the end of the season.

Cavaliers were gifted a spot in the semi-finals when their preliminary round opponents, BC Allrounders, defaulted last Sunday after turning up with just four players at Shelly Bay.

"I don't know what happened to the rest of them," admitted club spokesman Kenneth Smith.

Meanwhile, defending champions North Village face Forties in the other semi-final at Shelly Bay.

Village beat Forties three times last season but Forties turned the tables on their rivals this year, winning all three matches.

Forties have appointed medium pacer Blake West as skipper in the absence of their talismanic captain Gordon Campbell, who is still recovering from an operation for a torn Achilles.

West is fit again after injury, as are Randy Simmons and Palithapushpara Kumara.

"We know Village can always be dangerous in the KO," said Campbell.

"They have a number of quality cricketers and some good role-players. But we are confident following three good results against them this year."

Village skipper Allen Walker said: "We look forward to our challenge against Forties on Sunday. I am hoping that our guys show up with the desire to play hard as this is the last tournament to at least come away with something."

¦ All club representatives are asked to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at BPSU for a briefing on the Commercial League's debut in the BCB's Twenty20 tournament, starting on Sunday, August 29.
