Bailey’s Bay residents took matters into their own hands and cleaned up trash on the beach at the weekend.

The beach and surrounding shoreline was cluttered with abandoned and storm-damaged boats and large pieces of wood and plastic. Jennifer Hind, who has complained about the problem in recent weeks, helped organise a clean-up on Saturday with support from more than 30 volunteers.

Help came from local families, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Warwick Academy Eco Club, Ciaran Keaveny from Horsfield Landscaping, and D&J Excavating, which provided two large dumpsters.

In addition, Scott Simmons and Tab Froud provided a boat to retrieve wreckage from the water and Vanese Gordon from the Ministry of Public Works Waste Management Section also pitched in to help.

More than ten tonnes of trash was transported to the Tynes Bay and airport waste management sites.

Ms Hind said: “I am very grateful for all the help offered to clean this neighbourhood beach so that it is now clean and safe for families to enjoy. It was truly a community effort.”
