Forum called to bring out best in students

School principals both public and private have endorsed a “cross-island parent expo” for families and students, to be held on Saturday, October 7.

Marking the commencement of another academic year, a statement this afternoon, from Kalmar Richards of CedarBridge Academy and David Horan of Warwick Academy, noted that learning is “an ongoing process, spanning a lifetime”.

Speaking on behalf of the island’s senior and middle school heads, the two added: “As principals of schools across the island in both the public and private sectors, we are well aware that humans of all ages — at our best — are both ‘teachers’ and ‘students’.

“Almost daily, in diverse circumstances, we are all offered opportunities to enlighten others and to be enlightened.”

The statement outlined an optimum learning culture, including:

• Practices that reinforce a positive self-image;

• The promotion of an appreciation of the premise that “failure” offers a doorway to learning;

• A healthy sense of respect for those others;

• An awareness of the premise that learning is reinforced by “doing”.

Next month’s event will offer families “some tools, insights and practices that can help leverage the potential of our island’s children”, the statement finished.
