Bean’s blast not enough for Stars
By Ivan CliffordDevonshire Stars’ Worrell Bean smashed a 36-ball 87 but still ended up on the losing side as North Village ran out easy winners in their Commercial Cricket League clash, while wet weather at the East End ruined the weekend’s eagerly-awaited game between defending champions Spring Garden Cavaliers and Forties without a ball being bowled.Bean, who hammered 10 sixes and five fours in his whirlwind knock, and Dion Wainwright, who struck eight fours and a six in his 69-ball 61, helped guide eight-man Stars to 187 from 29.3 overs at Devonshire Rec.Village’s best bowler was Dejon Benjamin, who claimed two for 26 from 7.3 overs, while Dion Ball, Jr also took two wickets but went for 71 runs in his seven overs. The handicap of playing three short proved too great for Stars as 10-man Village, with 54 overs at their disposal, eased to 190 for two in the 41st over.Mike Payne led the way with nine fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 103-ball 80 while Ball chipped in with 49 from 40 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes, and number three Kevin Mallory made 30.Stars have failed to field a full team so far this season they played with nine men in their opener against Forties before defaulting to Cavaliers but skipper Andre Smith allayed fears over the team’s depth, saying: “I’m working on that.”Cavaliers and Forties called off their game at 1.30pm after an hour of steady drizzle at Garrison Field.“As soon as we called it off the rain bucketed down,” Forties’ skipper Gordon Campbell.“So we left. Got to Devil’s Hole and the road was dry. Couldn’t believe it.”Forties remain top with 25 points from three matches but Cavaliers can join them if they beat Village at Garrison Field this weekend when Forties have a bye.Village can also go joint top if they beat Cavaliers.Cavaliers are hoping it’s third time lucky as they have not played a match since edging Forties by five runs in the Memorial Trophy in early May.Asked if the lack of action following Stars’ default on May 27 and Sunday’s rainout was affecting his players, Cavaliers’ skipper Dave Greenidge said: “Not really, the guys are keeping in form by playing in the Evening Cricket League.”This Sunday’s other match sees Jamaican Association (five points) take on Stars (no points) at Shelly Bay.Last season, Cavaliers completed an unprecedented clean sweep of the league’s four main trophies, winning the league, League Cup, knockout and Memorial Trophy. The League Cup, using a Twenty20 format, gets underway on June 24.
