Jamaicans claim first title for six years
Jamaican Association clinched the Commercial Cricket League title with a four-wicket victory over North Village at Warren Simmons Community Field.
The Jamaicans, who last won the title in 2002, reached their victory target of 196 with more than ten overs to spare.
"We definitely deserved it after all the hard work we put in," said manager Glenmore Barrett.
Forties, the only team capable of stopping the Jamaicans going into Sunday's final round of matches, had to settle for seven points for a winning draw against Spring Garden Cavaliers at Shelly Bay after Yatin Gawas smashed a century for the runners-up.
With the title on the line, and holding a four-point lead over Forties, Jamaican Association restricted North Village to 195 for six after winning the toss.
Village's top scorers were Samitha Ranaweera, who struck four sixes and a four in his 49 not out, while skipper Reggie Benjamin hit three sixes and five fours in his 45.
Michael Campbell was the pick of the Jamaican attack, claiming three for 36 from 12 overs. Although Kevin Mallory took two for 50 from nine overs, the Jamaicans romped to 196 for six in 31.2 overs.
Chefton Hall top scored with 46, which included three sixes and three fours, while other useful contributions came from Ian Coke (34) and Kevin Abrahams (27 not out).
Forties, who, like the Jamaicans, went through the League season unbeaten, piled up 236 for six declared in 40 overs, Gawas stealing the show with his 81-ball 105.
Gawas, a chef from Goa, struck eight fours before reaching three figures in style, smashing three successive sixes off the bowling of Jerry Callender before falling in the same over.
Skipper Gordon Campbell, who made 36, applauded Gawas' knock, saying, "Yatin is making bigger scores because he has improved his shot selection tremendously."
Justin Barritt chipped in with 21, while Lloyd Morrison took two for 57 from 12 overs, and later made 21.
Cavaliers, left with 44 overs to force victory, never recovered from losing a wicket without a run on the board, and slumped to 51 for six before Ishwar Narayanan (20 from 71 balls) and Boobalan Kannan (20 not out from 74 balls) put up the shutters to deny Forties.
David DeSilva snapped up four for 19 from eight overs, and Hoyt Zuill took three for 39 from 14 as Cavaliers closed on 106 for eight.
Ernst & Young claimed the points after St. David's failed to show up at Garrison Field.
"We waited until 1:30 p.m. and there was no point in wasting any more time," said Ernst & Young skipper Karunakar Kaushik.
Meanwhile, the spotlight switches to the League Cup Twenty20 semi-finals at Shelly Bay on Sunday, with Cavaliers playing North Village at noon, followed by Ernst & Young against BC Allrounders at 3:30 p.m.
