Campbell lashes ton as Forties march on
Skipper Gordon Campbell smashed a century as unbeaten Commerial Cricket League leaders Forties went on the rampage against Ernst & Young during a weekend of high totals and superb bowling performances led by Spring Garden Cavaliers' Lloyd Morrison's seven-wicket haul against St. David's.
Ten-man Forties made it three wins in a row as they piled up a massive 310 for three declared from 36 overs after winning the toss and then completed a 187-run victory as they dismissed the accountants for 123 in the 23rd over at T.N. Tatem Middle School in Warwick.
Openers Campbell and Johnny Simoes knocked the stuffing out of Ernst & Young with a punishing opening stand of 206, Campbell stroking 20 fours and three sixes in his 87-ball 126 while Simoes' 72 from 74 balls contained nine fours and a six.
Number three Yatin Gawas was caught on the boundary off his fourth ball after hitting the first three for six but there was no let-up for Ernst & Young's weary bowlers as Simoes' brother Reggie made 32 not out from 18 balls and Harold Minors weighed in with an unbeaten 40 from 19 balls.
David DeSilva scythed through the Ernst & Young batting, claiming six for 52 from 8.4 overs, while Gawas chipped in with two for 32 from six. Jason Wakeford and Janaka Ginige each made 21 for the losers.
"T.N. Tatem had very short boundaries," said Campbell. "Still, on any field 310 is a bit daunting. Their batsmen perished going for the runs."
Ernst & Young skipper Karunakar Kaushik admitted: " It was a disaster. We had no excuses – Forties played very well."
Jamaican Association made it two wins from as many matches as they beat BC Allrounders by 76 runs at Warren Simmons Community Field in Somerset.
Jamaican openers Presley Millwood and Michael Campbell laid the foundation for an imposing 253 for eight with an opening stand of 49, Millwood hitting five fours and a six in his 53 while Campbell made 28. Skipper Chris Daley (39), Ian Coke (37) and Chefton Hall (32) kept the runs flowing to set a difficult target for BC Allrounders whose most successful bowlers were Lamont Talbot (four for 85 from 13 overs) and Worrell Bean (two for 39 from 16).
BC Allrounders went for their shots, Bean making 40, Shejuan Swan 29 and Rashid Ebbin 20, before the team subsided to 174 in the 28th over.
The Jamaican bowling was spearheaded by David Gibbs (three for 37 from eight), Kevin Abrahams (two for 24 from 4.3 overs), Campbell (two for 24 from five) and Daley (two for 40 from four).
Ten-man North Village picked up their second win in three outings, slow bowler Lyndon Fubler claiming six for 18 in 7.1 overs as Hamilton Parish, who played three short again, tumbled to a 60-run defeat at Southampton Oval.
Village's 192 for seven was highlighted by Allen Walker's unbeaten 77 which included seven fours and a six. Skipper Reggie Benjamin made 32 and Randy Smith 22 while top bowler for Parish, who also fielded only eight men in their earlier defeat against nine-man Forties, was former Cup Match batsman Mark Ray, who took two for 25 from nine.
In Parish's 25.1-over reply of 132, Mike Burgess topscored with 47, Curtis Lee made 26 and Ricky Hill 22.
A boundary-filled fourth-wicket stand of 143 between Spring Garden Cavaliers' Richard Foulds and former fast bowler Anthony Brathwaite put ten-man St. David's attack to the sword as Cavaliers ran up a huge total of 285 for seven in a match reduced to 40 overs a side at Garrison Field because of a delayed start.
Braithwaite blasted nine sixes and four fours in his 94 while Foulds' 89 contained five sixes and five fours. Former Fine Leg Byes allrounder Craig Smith chipped in with 28, ex-Jamaican Association batsman Donovan Livingston added 23 not out and Courtney Weekes made 22. Grayson McCalllan, who later topscored for St. David's with 24, took four for 82 in 15 overs while Gregory Outerbridge took two for 56 from nine.
St. David's had no answer to the bowling of Morrison, who plundered seven for 43 from 12 overs, as Cavaliers completed a crushing 181-run victory with 14 overs to spare. Milton Jones made 23 not out.
