Sandys youngsters bounce back
Sunday's matches eventually abandoned as draws, but newcomers Sandys Community Youth Club showed a fighting spirit that should stand them in good stead this season.
After being outplayed by defending champions Hemisphere Leg Trappers in their opening fixture, SCYC bounced back to dismiss Devonshire Stars for 140 in 30 overs and had reached 26 for one from eight overs when the game at Shelly Bay was called off.
Opening bowler Kent Greenidge snapped up four for 57 in 10 lively overs for the west enders, assisted by Rudolph Simons and team manager Gerald Fubler, who took two wickets apiece. Robert Dill Jr, with 45 (two fours), and Worrell Bean, who struck four fours in his 44, were the chief contributors to the Stars total. Fubler then showed good form with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 22.
With West Indian Association -- the only team now with a 100 percent record -- having a bye, 10-man Leg Trappers moved five points clear at the top after dismissing eight-man Watford Sports Club for 160 in the penultimate over and then making a quickfire reply at the Royal Naval Field.
Trappers' left-arm slow bowler James Swan returned his best figures for his new club -- four for 45 in 11.1 overs -- but a fifth-wicket stand of 52 between skipper Terry Corday, who hit five fours and a six in his 38, and Ray DeSilva (30) helped Watford recover from a shaky 68 for four.
Opener Terry Ward, smartly caught and bowled by former Somerset Cup Match player Swan, made 22.
Gary Knight dominated an unbroken opening stand of 34 in seven overs with Jeremy Franklin, hitting two fours and two sixes in his 27 not out before the game was called off.
Corday was angry over three no-shows from his selected XI while Trappers were left short after leading player Ian Smith, due to make his first appearance of the season, injured a foot in stepping on a piece of coral.
St. David's rued the rain at Garrison Field where skipper George O'Brien claimed four for 30 from 9.4 overs to help dismiss Jamaican Association for 127 in the 40th over. Junior Lindo hit five fours in topscoring with 38 while Legay Cannonier made 17.
Jeremy Roberts, who bowled allrounder Michael Campbell in his first game of the season for a duck, finished with two for 17 while George Cannonier had two for 19.
"It was disappointing as we had a real chance to score a rare victory over the Jamaicans,'' said O'Brien whose side were unable to start their innings.
North Village and Forties were forced to switch venues when they found the pitch at Sea Breeze Oval waterlogged and unplayable, even though it was covered.
The teams improvised by heading to vacant Police Field, where ironically the uncovered pitch was fit for play, even though the bounce was variable after a 2.00 p.m. start.
Pace bowler Chris Caisey picked up three for 18 from 10 overs as Forties, sent in by Village, struggled to 64 for five from 25 overs before rain forced the players off. Alan Lamb topscored with 18 while skipper Gordon Campbell and Gerald Simons each made 16.
