In-form Berkeley blasts ton as Watford win again

Troy Berkeley continued his sparkling form with the bat, blasting his second century in a fortnight as Watford Sports Club continued their climb up the Commercial Cricket League standings.

Ian Smith also hammered an unbeaten century for leaders Hemisphere Leg Trappers but they had their unhindered progress checked by Forties, who became the first team to deny them victory this season with a hard-fought draw at Nationals.

Leg Trappers took six and a half points to Forties' three and a half and Jamaican Association trimmed Trappers' lead to 15 points, cementing second place with a hollow victory over bottom club Public Transportation Board who defaulted after turning up with only three players at Shelly Bay.

And as teams reached the halfway point of the league season on Sunday left-arm seamer Dawson Dates claimed a six-wicket haul to spur sixth-placed Police Recreation Club to an emphatic 117-run victory over St. David's at Lord's.

Berkeley followed up his 124 against PTB by clouting 10 sixes and six fours in an unbeaten 102, adding 139 runs for the third wicket with Michael Corday, who made 95, as defending champions Watford amassed 257 for four declared in 34 overs en route to a crushing 144-run victory over West End Warriors at the Royal Naval Field. Corday struck 11 fours and four sixes.

It was the third big total in a row for Watford, putting a poor start to the season behind them. They had run up scores of 205 for one declared and 305 in their two previous matches.

Donville Yarde was Warriors' most successful bowler with two for 63 but despite 34 from Mel Thomas and 21 from skipper Gladstone Eve, Warriors subsided to 113 all out in 37 overs, Terence Corday taking three for 21 and Blake West two for 12.

Shaven-headed Smith, a former English county 2nd XI player who has been the scourge of batsmen with the ball this season, justified his promotion to number three in the batting order, smashing eight fours and five sixes in an unbeaten 102 as Leg Trappers accelerated to reach 199 for four after being sent in.

Smith and Graham Strange (40) teamed up to launch a furious assault on the flagging Forties attack, handicapped by an injury to strike bowler Craig Cannonier, as Leg Trappers lashed 97 runs in the final nine overs on an easy-paced pitch.

Skipper Gordon Campbell persevered to pick up three for 53 in 13 overs after Cannonier (one for 10 from 5.1 overs) limped out of the attack with a pulled leg muscle.

Noel Capewell (two for 25) removed both openers cheaply but Alan Lamb (39) and Harold Minors (22) spearheaded a recovery, lifting Forties to 83 for three at the halfway point.

Leg Trappers, who had reeled off six successive victories after their opening fixture against Police was washed out, sensed victory though as Forties slumped to 108 for eight in the 34th over.

James Broadbent started the slide with two quick wickets and fast bowler Smith, introduced into the attack late and pounding in off a 25-yard run-up, had both Lamb and Cannonier caught behind. But Andrew Paynter (13 not out) led a rearguard action as Forties survived to close at 128 for eight.

More than a quarter of the Police total of 199 came in extras -- 50 -- and there were also useful contributions from Wayne Clarke (32), Rudolph Richards (29), Patrick Waithe (28) and Dates (23 not out). Anthony Burchall (three for 22) and Milton Jones (two for 15) were St. David's most successful bowlers.

Although Arthur Pitcher, Sr. made 36, St. David's had no answer to Dates, who claimed six for 25 from 13 unchanged overs. Junior Watts and Richards chipped in with two wickets apiece as St. David's tumbled to 82 all out in the 28th over.

TROY BERKELEY -- smashed 10 sixes and six fours in a sparkling 102 not out.
