New indoor playground set to open next year
Parents in Bermuda will rejoice to learn that there will soon be something to do with your children when it is raining outside.A new custom-designed indoor playground, Jumpin’ Gems, is set to open in Hamilton during the first quarter of next year. And, it will be open seven days a week. The brainchild of Lori and Christopher King, Jumpin’ Gems will feature two, two-storey play units — one for two to four year olds and a second, larger unit for five-12 year olds.Located in Magnolia Place, at the corner of Victoria and Parliament Streets, Jumpin’ Gems has 4,500 square feet of indoor space, plus 2,000 extra square feet of loft space for birthday party seating for up to 30 people. The gymnasium units feature several activities, including a climbing wall, slides, mazes, monkey bars and many more activities that will keep children happy and expending energy.Mrs King, a mother of five children, has been holding summer and holiday camps for the past 13 years at the Hamilton Seventh-Day Adventist Centre. But she recently realised that there were so many camps available for kids but not enough activities to do with them.“We needed somewhere to go because we would do the same things over and over again,” she said. Then, one day when it was raining and her three-year-old son had too much energy to be cooped up in the house, the idea came to her.“I said to myself ‘my goodness, we don’t have anywhere to go to get rid of this energy’,” she said. “If we were in the US I would have brought him to Chuck E Cheese or something similar.”That’s when she started her research and found North Carolina-based Soft Play, a custom indoor playground design firm that builds systems for McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A and Chuck E Cheese.Mrs King’s husband, Christopher, who is an underwriter for Colonial, is her business partner.Jumpin’ Gems will also feature a room dedicated to PlayStation and Xbox where game competitions will be held and a balloon station will also be located on the premises where balloons can be purchased on the spot.Mrs King, who is a qualified children’s etiquette consultant will also offer puppet shows to teach children proper etiquette and programmes for camps, after school care and nurseries as well.“We’re so excited and nervous at the same time, especially to be opening in this economy,” she said. “I’ve done a lot of research and these types of indoor playgrounds work well in places that have 70,000 people or less. This is a wonderful time of year for the indoor playground to open. I have big, big plans and lots of ideas.”Some of those ideas include holding Sweet 16s, minute-to-win-it parties, karaoke events and also plan on offering night-time shuttle service for families who park in area car parks. The Kings are hoping for a March opening, however the equipment takes six to eight weeks to arrive and then once it does, it takes 30 days to install.Meanwhile, the space is so large that Mrs King is opening up the area for holiday camps to visit in the coming weeks and his holding a New Year’s Eve ‘lock in’ for children where they will offer fun activities and a sleep over to ring in the new year.Jumpin’ Gems will be open seven days a week, from Monday-Thursday 8:30am-8pm; Friday 8am-10pm; Saturday 9am-10pm; Sunday 12:30pm-6pm. Parties can rent out the entire space on Sunday from 9am-12pm.Jumpin’ Gems will offer daily walk-in rates, fun pass rates and a year membership that provides a discount on a party and other perks. For more information, visit jumpingems.com or call 441-599-5712.
