Bean steers Stars to victory

Devonshire Stars scraped home against the 10 men of Allied Blues.

Bean took four for 18 from his 6.3 overs as Blues were bowled out for 80 at Garrison Field and then hit 24 not out to guide Stars to a three-wicket victory.

Elsewhere Watford Sports Club crushed St. David's by 174 runs to earn their third successive win and took over at the top of the Commercial League table from Leg Trappers, who had a week off.

Forties Cricket Club edged West Indian Association by seven runs in a nail-biter at Nationals and are now second in the league just three points behind Watford, while Jamaican Association beat North Village to bag their second successive 10-point haul.

In a low-scoring affair at Garrison Field, Allied Blues opener Gladwin Caines held his team's innings together, batting right through to finish with an unbeaten 29.

The only other batsman to make an impact was number four Brian Brangman who made a quickfire 30. Brangman hit two massive sixes, one of which caused the ball to be lost for 20 minutes, as well as two fours.

Andre Smith, who took two for five, bowled Brangman before he could do significant damage and Derek Smith chipped in with two for 12.

Faced with a victory target of just 81, Shane Grant (16) and Frankie Simons (11) got Stars off to a solid start, before a middle-order collapse left them struggling.

But Bean came in at number seven and soon tipped the balance back in Stars' favour, hammering two sixes and two fours in his 20 not out, including the winning boundary as Stars reached 84-7 in 20 overs.

At Royal Naval Field, Watford Sports Club were always in command after amassing 239-9 from their 42 overs.

Opener Terry Ward top-scored with 69, while Dave DeSilva hit 65 and Mike Corday 39, as the St. David's bowling attack suffered substantial punishment.

The most successful bowler for the east enders was S.Pitcher, who took three for 44, while H.O'Connor took two for 34 and Eddie Lamb two for 42.

St. David's were then skittled out for a paltry 65, with medium pace bowler Blake West, who took five for 14, doing most of the damage.

West was backed up by 18-year-old Trevor Corday, who claimed three wickets for 15, while Dave DeSilva registered figures of two for nine.

Forties probably did not feel they had posted a winning total when they were dismissed for 104 against West Indian Association. But it proved to be just enough on a difficult track at Nationals, as their opponents were skittled out for 97.

Skipper Gordon Campbell top-scored for Forties with 38 and was supported by Gladwin Ingham, who hit 24.

Jerry Calendar produced a remarkable spell for WIA, taking six for 17 from 12 overs, while Alwin Clarke claimed three for 32.

Several batsman reached double figures for WIA, including top scorer Chris Clarke who hit 15. But Forties bowlers Braxton Stowe (three for 12), David Jarrett (three for 30) and Campbell (three for 34) ensured that Forties kept their unbeaten league record.

At Shelly Bay, Ian Coke produced a captain's innings of 88 not out to lead Jamaican Association to victory over North Village.

Number five batsman Coke was dropped before he reached double figures, but capitalised on his stroke of luck, hitting five boundaries as he saw his side through to a total of 192.

Neil Anglin took three for 44 for Village, while Mike Young took three for 57, as no batsman apart from Coke reached 20.

Village got off to a poor start and by the time they had reached 51-6, their victory hopes had all but vanished.

It was then that Chris Caisey and Derek Bell began a plucky partnership which yielded 42 runs and added respectability to the Village total. Caisey top-scored with 37 before he was run out, while Bell scored 15.

With Sinroy Crosdale claiming three for 19, Errol Ray three for 23 and Mackie Campbell three for 39, Jamaican Association bowled out Village for 109, giving them an 83-run triumph.
