Festival in San Diego earlier this month prompted further discussion about staging the event here in 1994.

The International Okinawan Gojuryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF)is to give the Bermuda Karate Institute a list of specific requirements for holding such an event.

And, if an understanding can be reached, IOGKF chief Morio Higaonna is to seek a final decision from his chief instructors at their next training camp in South Africa in February, 1993.

At this year's festival, Skipper Ingham won a bronze medal in masters open forms (over 45), while Kristina Ingham placed first in women's open forms (over 45) as the only entrant in the category.

BASKETBALL BAS Somerset Rebels excelled from the charity line when it mattered in a nailbiting 66-63 win over Metro in the Bermuda Basketball Association semifinals on Tuesday night.

The game went down to the wire with both teams getting balanced scoring but what counted most in the end was that the Rebels sank 16 of 20 free throws while Metro converted only 10 of 16.

Kevin Stovell was Somerset's scoring star with 26 points, which included a perfect six-for-six night at the line. Allen Bean assisted with 13 points. For Metro, Harold Davidson scored 19 points while Roderick Spencer and Butch Haley had 13 each.

Somerset's opponents in the final will be Dream Team, who were 47-33 winners over Tucker's Tees in the other semifinal.

Tees held the league's leading scorer Tony Williams to 17 points but were unable to hold off a strong team effort as D.Richards chipped in with nine points and G.Douglas seven.

Free-throw shooting also led to the night's biggest shock as Four Stars Dynamics beat The Centre 29-27 in the women's semifinal.

The Centre made only one free throw out of 11 attempts with Rich Weatherbee missing four times in the final two minutes of a close affair.

Weatherbee led all scorers nevertheless with 18 points while Earlene Godfrey had 14 for Four Star who will meet Meyer Flyers in the final.

SAILING SLG The Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association's annual Longtail Weekend took place last weekend.

Saturday's racing took place along the south shore with a start off Pompano.

Fourteen boats answered the starting gun for a close beat down the south shore in variable, and sometimes frustrating wind conditions, which freed off around Tuckers Town to allow a faster point of sail as the fleet headed for St.

George's.

The smaller boats headed straight for St. George's Harbour while the larger vessels made for the offshore turning marks at Mill's.

Saturday night's entertainment left a number of sore heads, which were not improved by Sunday morning's weather.

Overcast, with the potential for heavy weather, the fleet assembled in St.

George's Harbour for a run straight back along the North Shore.

Low tide and deep draught proved a problem for Derek Ratteray in Taxi when they became stranded on a shoal in the harbour.

Good racing took place on the North Shore, particularly in Class Three where Thistledew (Bobby Oatley) and Delphinus (Neil Couper) stayed close to each other until reaching the Dundonald Channel, not really getting split until caught in a hard squall off Elbow.

A squall, which sucked out much of the wind, left most of the fleet becalmed for 30 minutes before starting the long creep into Hamilton Harbour.

GOLF GLF East End Mini Yacht Club's `A' team of Ed (Tinty) Ming, Willougby Harvey, Keith Maynard and Daniel Stovell won the St. George's Cricket Club's annual benefit tournament at St. George's Golf Club with a four-ball best-ball score of 50.

East End MYC `B' were second by retrogression on 52. The team was comprised of Rupert Hollis, Ken Outerbridge, Carlton Welch and Brian McCallan.
