A hive of bees is scheduled for removal tomorrow from a tree by the junction of Dundonald Street East and King Street, according to the City of Hamilton.

A Corporation spokeswoman said the hive had been scheduled for a safe eviction at about 9.30am.

Spencer Field, a beekeeper with Passion Fields, said the removal should be “pretty straightforward” although the hive was high up in the tree.

He added: “The tree will get a little trim at the top in the process but no other harm should come to it.

“Once I’ve extracted the bees safely with my vacuum, they will be relocated to one of my apiaries at Riddell’s Bay.”

Mr Field dealt with a similar extraction earlier this year on Dundonald Street this July, which marked roughly the 30th swarm that he had relocated this year.

Steven DeSilva, the City’s superintendent of parks, said a high lift would be needed and traffic would be redirected.

Signs will be places in the area reminding the public to use caution until the hive is safely removed.

The Corporation issued a reminder for the public to inform them of any bee activity in the city that could pose a threat.

Any dispersal or relocation of bees should be handled by a professional that can assure the protection of the bees, which are valuable for agriculture.
