Students make their business plans at ‘Be Your Own Boss’ workshop

A group of 20 Bermuda students attended an entrepreneurial skills workshop entitled ‘Be Your Own Boss’.The event spanned two half-days and was organised by student interns at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC).At the event, students were learned about the tools of entrepreneurial success and how to apply them.Students held business meetings with representatives from the BEDC, the Economic Empowerment Zones Agency (EEZA), HSBC and Expertise Ltd. After being taught the fundamentals of business and how to create a business plan, the students were broken into four small groups and created business plans based on collective interests.One team, consisting of Arthur Begeman, Jonathan Briers and Peter Miller, created a plan for a brewery named Longtail Brewing.A second team involving Allison Conyers, Kirsten Nusum, Sherie Jones, Chanell Darrell, Whitney Ming and Angela Dickinson proposed a healthcare company called Fit-Future.triathTOUR, a tour company that encompasses biking, walking and kayaking, was the name of the third business proposal by Perri Furbert, Ranae Bean, Subira Dill, Nicole Nelson and Mary Sisa. A hydropower energy company called BluEnergy was the final idea presented and was the brainchild of Danielle Moniz, Kian Butterfield, Chardonnai Hughes, Shondelle Paynter, Collisha Hendrickson and Connor Ruberry.Each presentation was judged by a panel that included Michelle Khaldun, the executive director of the BEDC, Carlton Crockwell, of Security Associates, and Heather Telford of Telford Electric.Additionally, encouraging speeches were given by entrepreneurs Kerry Judd of New Beginnings Inc and Ray Lambert of the EEZA, as well as Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors who applauded the students and offered them her support.Event organisers, Imani Cherry, Aliyyah Ahad and Shain DeShields, spoke to the workshop’s success, saying they’re “pleased with the turnout as well as the enthusiasm of the students”.A spokeswoman for the BEDC said: “As university students themselves, the organisers were grateful that their summer internship at the BEDC gave them the opportunity to create such an event for their peers.”
