Dancers and singers entertained some of Bermuda’s older people at an event hosted by the Bermuda Housing Trust.

The organisation held its Annual Seniors’ Tea at St John’s Church hall, in Pembroke, to “celebrate the contributions” its tenants have made over the years to the island’s community.

Local icon Gene Steede, who is also a BHT tenant, was among the talent on show.

Fellow entertainers included a group from United Dance Productions and musician Tony Brannon, who performed on behalf of the charity Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

John Barritt, the BHT chairman, said: “Having the opportunity to honour our seniors and treat them to an afternoon of fellowship, food and entertainment is something we look forward to every year and I thank all those involved in making this so successful.

“The greatest service the trust can provide to Bermuda’s seniors in need is access to quality, safe, affordable housing. We are passionate about this. “Affordable housing offers the most positive impact on our seniors’ quality of life and eases the burden placed on families who are supporting senior family members.”

The trust thanked volunteers and sponsors. Funding for the event was provided by corporate donors Axa XL, Oil Management, Orbis, car dealers Auto Solutions and wholesalers Butterfield & Vallis.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, and Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, also attended the tea.

The BHT provides a housing programme for some of the island’s most vulnerable seniors who are capable of living alone.

It has five residential estates, offering 180 units for 194 people.

A spokesman said: “It isn’t just rental accommodation that the trust seeks to provide but rather communities that consist of rental units that our tenants can call home.

“The trust continues to review the opportunity to provide more homes so that we can meet the growing need.

“All of the trust’s residences remain fully occupied with a waiting list.

“It is hoped BHT, with continued support, will soon be able to develop additional housing and meet the challenge of an ever-growing number of baby-boomers in need of affordable living options once they retire.”
