Kieshon Smith has quit as coach of Somerset Trojans for personal reasons after one season at the helm.

Danvers Seymour Jr has returned to the post he vacated after winning the Premier Division title in the 2014-2015 season.

Smith said yesterday that personal matters had prevented him from committing to the job for this season.

Despite failing to secure a Dudley Eve Trophy spot last term, Smith was pleased with the team’s accomplishments which included winning the Friendship Trophy and competing in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships in Haiti in February. “I have some personal things that are more important right now,” Smith said. “It was a good season, I won my first piece of silverware and was able to achieve a lot. It was a great honour to compete in the [Caribbean Club] Championships tournament, which helped get me to another level.

“I’ve got so much knowledge to pass on, but I still have a lot of time left in my coaching career. It is only because of unforeseen circumstances that [my time at Somerset] was shorter than expected.”

Smith left Hamilton Parish to take over at Trojans who won the league the previous season for their first title in 22 years.

They won the Friendship Trophy this year on New Year’s Day with a 2-1 victory over PHC Zebras in the final at Somerset Cricket Club.

However, inconsistent form in the second half of the season resulted in them battling relegation with Southampton Rangers and Parish, who both dropped down to the First Division.

“For me it was an excellent season, to win one of the biggest trophies of the year on New Year’s Day at Somerset — it doesn’t get any better than that,” he said.

“Credit to the team, the guys worked hard to raise money to go to Haiti, which was the first time the guys had travelled together as a team.”

Smith watched the first round of matches in this season’s Dudley Eve Trophy and feels PHC Zebras, under new coach Scott Morton, could be a team to watch this season.

“I like PHC’s whole package, not only on the field but they also have a good organisation off it,” he said.

• The Bermuda Football Association’s Second Merit Awards and Prize-Giving Gala for last season will be held at CedarBridge Academy on Saturday, September 24 at 6.30pm.

The BFA is encouraging players and fans to purchase tickets by Thursday. Tickets are available from the BFA office at $70 per person.

There will be special pricing for a table of eight or ten persons. The event will include a cocktail reception, the annual prize-giving, three-course meal and merit awards ceremony.
