A man who crashed his motorbike while more than three times over the alcohol limit was banned from the roads for 18 months and fined $1,350 yesterday.

Don Simmons, 55, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court and apologised for the crash, which happened on Middle Road, Sandys, near the junction with Wreck Road.

Larissa Burgess, for the prosecution, said that Simmons crashed into a wall and had to be taken to hospital with leg injuries.

Police found bottles of alcohol at the scene and went to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where Simmons was being treated.

Simmons, from Warwick, was arrested and agreed to a blood test, which showed 243 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

Simmons also tested positive for a trace amount of cocaine.

He was fined $1,200 for the drink-driving offence plus $150 after he admitted driving without a valid driver’s licence.

The incident happened on May 24.

Simmons told magistrate Tyrone Chin he had been “racing back home”.

He was given until November 2 to pay.
