A 65-year-old motorcyclist who died after a crash with a trash truck on Harrington Sound Road yesterday morning has been named as Calvin O’Mara.

The accident near the junction with Broken Hill Road in Smith’s happened at about 9am, according to a police spokesman, and Mr O’Mara was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It appears that the 65-year-old male motorcyclist was travelling down Broken Hill Road when he collided with a trash truck that was travelling on Harrington Sound Road.

“As a result he was pronounced dead at the scene by an on-call physician.

“A family liaison officer has been assigned to the family and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Calvin O’Mara is now under way.”

The scene was cordoned off and is being processed by the relevant Bermuda Police Service officers.

Speaking in the Senate today, senator Jeff Baron, the Minister for National Security, called on the public to be careful on the roads in the wake of the fatal crash.

“This is an issue that we must confront,” he said. “When we pick up our keys and insert them in the ignition, there has to be something that goes through each and every one of us that says I want to get from A to B in as safe a way as possible.

“Getting on a vehicle on the road in Bermuda seems to be a dangerous occupation on the island and we have to treat it as such. We all need to stop, pause and think.”

Mr O’Mara’s death marks the island’s seventh road fatality of the year.
