Golf fan gets shot at $25,000 jackpot
Championship at Mid Ocean Club could end up pocketing a cool $25,000.
Sponsors Gillette will pick one spectator at random at the end of the October 7 tournament and offer he or she the chance to sink a putt from ten foot range on the 18th green.
If the putt falls, Gillette will hand over a $25,000 prize.
A day earlier, following the Pro-Am, even more will be at stake when five Americans who advanced through play-offs earlier this year will be brought to the Island for a potential one million dollar pay-day.
Whoever emerges victorious from the Monday putting play-off will also be given the chance to sink one 10 foot putt for a million dollar jackpot.
Next Tuesday's Tour Challenge brings to Bermuda 24 of the world's top professionals -- eight each from the PGA Tour, PGA Senior Tour and LPGA Tour -- who will team up in threesomes to compete for a $1.8 million purse.
Among the big names are US Ryder Cup players Freddie Couples, Davis Love and Scott Hoch as well as fellow PGA Tour players Nick Price, Craig Stadler, Mark Brooks, John Cook and Payne Stewart.
The Seniors include Hale Irwin, Jim Colbert, Graham Marsh, Gil Morgan, Walter Morgan, Bob Murphy, Jay Sigel and Lee Trevino, while current top money winner Annika Sorenstam leads a ladies field that also includes Chris Johnson, Sally Little, Nancy Lopez, Michelle McGann, Barb Mucha, Kelly Robbins and Karrie Webb.
Ocean View Golf Club manager Bill Pitt changed partners but still successfully defended his Bermuda Mixed Foursomes Championship title at Ocean View yesterday.
After winning the two-day event with Erva Robinson at St. George's a year ago, Pitt this time teamed up with Alicia Hardy to shoot a winning score of 140 (70-70) -- four better than runners-up Zane DeSilva and Juliana Jack (68-76).
Third place went to Dennis Burton and Pat Morgan on 149 (74-75).
In the net division, Cleveland Smith and Gilda Furbert took the honours with 134, beating Leon and Valerie Nearon on retrogression.
