Tuff Dogs stun Onions in FA Cup
Tuff Dogs became the second Corona League club to advance to the first round of the FA Cup last night when they edged Flanagan’s Onions 2-1 at Goose Gosling Field.
Shaun Brown scored twice for Dogs, late in the first half and then in the first five minutes of the restart, to give them a comfortable two-goal lead. However, Akim Johnston kept it close with a 74th-minute penalty for Onions before Tuff Dogs held on for the victory.
They join Footy Kings, who beat St David’s 5-2 on Sunday, as the Corona League’s two representatives in the first round, which is scheduled for mid-January and will involve the 11 Premier Division teams and the three First Division sides who won on Sunday — Vasco, Young Men’s Social Club and Hamilton Parish.
Jermaine Gibbons, the Tuff Dogs coach, was pleased with his team’s performance and is looking forward to the first round draw.
“I think we played well, given that we only played a couple of practice matches,” Gibbons said. “We have a fairly competitive team, and moving forward we should be able to give other teams a good game.
“We are still fairly young, but things are coming together and we are looking forward to going to the next round. “[Footy Kings] have a lot more experienced players than us. We have some name players but only one or two of them have played for established clubs. But because we’re competitive and these guys are dedicated, we’ll be all right.
“We just need to get more practice games in. That was our first competitive game, as the Corona League hasn’t started yet. Whoever we play we’re going to give 100 per cent.”
