Denise's poetry video to get premiere at Canadian festival
A VIDEO of original poetry by Bermudian Denise DeMoura will be premiered at the Tidal Wave Film Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, on November 7.
, a Hitching Poet Production, will be screened along with 16 other poetry videos at Tilley Hall at the University of New Brunswick.
On November 8 at 1 p.m. Ms DeMoura will be on an industry panel, with Joe Blades and Adeena Karasick, discussing the making of video poems .
The video was written, directed and performed by Denise DeMoura. It is a series of linked poems which takes alternatively lighthearted and serious looks at issues of abuse, healing and the creating of safe personal boundaries. touches on issues ranging from academic analysis through the extreme silliness of being a superhero to bare naked vulnerability and the power of rap music ? all within 12 minutes.
It includes ? and expands upon poems ? in DeMoura's first full-lenth poetry book, , published in 2000.
A rough-cut version of was shown at the Bermuda National Gallery last winter. Most of the video was filmed in Dorchester, New Brunswick by Marsha Lemos. Musician Alan Syliboy pounds out hip hop beats on the keyboard to accompany DeMoura as she belts out the poem/song , to conclude the video. It was filmed by Erin Syliboy on Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia.
"I had so much fun making this video," says Ms DeMoura , "My friends were great; I couldn't have done it without them.
"I think this video is one of the best things I've ever created and I'm looking forward to shooting another one in Bermuda this winter."
Ms DeMoura is a performance poet who is also known as The Poet Hitch Hiker. She performs mostly in the Maritimes of Canada, and in the winter in Bermuda, and also works as a freelance writer and journalist. She is the author of several poetry chapbooks and a full-length poetry collection. She started Hitching Poet Productions in 2003. is her first video.
