A 30-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor during a cruise from Boston to Bermuda.

The Mississippi man is currently awaiting extradition from Bermuda to the United States, prosecutors said in a news release.

The defendant was officially charged on Wednesday in a Massachusetts federal court, according to the US Attorney’s office.

According to a report in the Boston Globe the child reported the incident to ship security, who in turn notified the Bermuda authorities.

Police arrested the man and notified officials in the United States.

This morning the Bermuda Police Service confirmed it was assisting with the investigation.

“The Bermuda Police Service is aware of a report of a sexual assault against a minor that took place on a cruise ship that was berthed in Bermuda recently,” a spokesman said.

“The BPS did the initial response and determined all parties involved were US citizens. In accordance with international practice the matter was handed over to an overseas law enforcement partner agency to complete the investigation.

“The BPS is assisting the investigation. Child safeguarding is a Service priority. Accepted best practice dictates that we not comment on the specifics of any investigation that involves minors.”
