Dem Youngins Got Talent (part II)
Bermuda's young people will have a chance to show what they are made of in an upcoming talent show this Sunday (weather permitting).
'Dem Youngins Got Talent Part II The Remix' will be held on July 13, at the Berkeley Institute. The doors open at 6.30 pm and show time is at 7.30 pm.
"The first part of this talent show was held last November," said organiser Latoya Brangman of Youngin Promotions.
"There will be some of the same people in this one, but also a few new people. We decided to do another one, because so many people liked the first one."
The event is meant to showcase the talents of Bermuda's young people.
"It is important to do things like this because there is so much negativity about young people," said Miss Brangman. "I am trying to show that not all young people are pregnant or sitting on walls. Some do slip, but some have dreams that we are trying to fulfill."
Miss Brangman graduated from Berkeley Institute in 2006.
"I am 20-years-old," she said. "To my knowledge I am one of the youngest promoters out there. But there are a lot of promoters working in Bermuda, so you never know. There could be someone younger."
"I was forced to start my company, to be honest," she said. "I have a passion for the performing arts, as well as promotions.
"I am interested in comedy. One lady told me I should start a promotion company to help Bermuda's young people. She felt that young people here don't have enough to do.
"That is what Youngin Promotions is about, promoting and excelling young people to reach their future endeavours in the performing arts industry."
Approximately ten people are scheduled to perform ranging from 13 to 21-years-old.
The line up will include violist Carika Weldon, a dance group called Fame consisting of Hannah Eggen, Vicki Camara and Kezia Caisey and singer Mickeela Astwood, among others.
"She writes her own music," said Miss Brangman.
Miss Brangman and funny man Nadanja Bailey will host the event.
"He did the last show," said Miss Brangman. "He encouraged me to do the next one."
She said she herself is taking a break from the stage. She recently played three different parts in Toni & Tina's Wedding.
She was also a runner-up in Bermuda's Teen Idol competition, and won a 'Miss Talent' award in the Miss Teen Bermuda 2004.
She said she would like to become a comedian or actress, but may study computers as a back-up.
Tickets in advance are $15, and $20 at the door. Tickets will be sold at Cellular One on Burnaby Street and The i-Store on Reid Street next to the Bank of Butterfield. Part proceeds will go to Nadanja Bailey's Multiimage Fund.
"It is in the process of becoming a scholarship fund," she said. "It will help young people study multi-media or entertainment."
The event is sponsored by CellularOne, i-Store, New Atlantic Films, Onion Television , and Broca Entertainment.
Due to inclement weather the show may be postponed. Contact Miss Brangman at 734-7827.
