A cancer charity is to hold a “Mad Hair Day” to raise funds to support its work.

Pals wants schools and businesses to join in and style their hair in “a mad or crazy way” or hold a Denim Day to boost the Paget-based charity.

Colleen English DeGrilla, executive director of Pals, hopes the event, which has run for six years, will not only raise the profile of the organisation but break their last goal by raising $30,000.

Ms DeGrilla said Pals was introduced to the fundraising idea by a former employee, who said it was “a common practice” for charities in Britain.

Mad Hair Day has become a major boost to the charity and has raised more $104,000 since 2012.

More than 100 registrations have already been logged for the September 28 event. Adults donate $5 to take part and children give $2. Participants are encouraged to raise matching donations from colleagues or schoolmates.

Ms DeGrilla said: “The kids love it — it’s a fun day and business staff feel great when they can participate in something as well.”

She added: “I’ve gotten some photos back where the kids are having a great time and I’ve wondered ‘how do they put so much effort into these?’”

Alison Williams, owner of the Headway spa and salon, has signed up for the event for several years after a cancer walk convinced her to help more.

She explained: “I realised I wanted to be able to help in other ways as my family have a lot of cancer in previous generations

“This year, as well as participating with our mad-hair look, we will be donating goodie bags for the Mad Hair Fair. I’d encourage anybody to stop by at the Headway salon, make a donation and pop a balloon to win a prize.

The day will end with a fair in Victoria Park from 3.30 to 7.30pm, with food and entertainment

People who raise the most cash will get the chance to win “a prize that’s fun and useable”. Schools and businesses can register to take part at info@pals.bm.
