Mom to quit Island after son's murder
Gun victim David Clarke was supposed to join his mother on a trip home to Barbados next Monday to celebrate his 27th birthday. But yesterday, instead of preparing for the vacation in their homeland, Angela Clarke, 54, was planning her son's funeral. She told The Royal Gazette his death makes her feel like returning to Barbados for ever.“I'm going to leave, I've had enough,” she said. “When they kill everybody, that's when it's going to stop. You hear of these things happening to families but you never think to hear it yourself. We moved to Bermuda for a better life. I can't say what I would like to say. But it's not better.”Mr Clarke was riding his bike back from the Mid Atlantic Boat Club when he was shot at the junction of Bandroom Lane and North Shore Road, Devonshire, around 10.30pm on Sunday. He died despite the efforts of an off-duty Emergency Medical Technician to save him.His father, David Clarke Sr, got a call from his other son D'Angelo, 20, soon after the shooting and they both headed to the scene. “I fell down, everything just went berserk,” he explained. Neither he nor his wife can understand why someone took their son's life.Mr Clarke Jr was single and stayed most of the time with his parents in Friswell's Road, Devonshire. He was shot near a friend's home where he sometimes stayed. While many of the 15 gun murders of the past two years have been gang-related, Mr and Mrs Clarke do not believe their son to have gang links.“Nothing that we know about,” said Mr Clarke, 56, of David Jr, who loved to fix bikes and computers and earned money importing clothes from overseas. “He was an average person but a loving person. We would do things together; projects and things. He was a good kid.”Mrs Clarke said: “He was happy and a loving son. He was very loved.”Mr and Mrs Clarke moved from Barbados to Bermuda when David was aged four-and-a-half. He attended Victor Scott Primary School, the Berkeley Institute and the Bermuda College where he earned a diploma as a computer technician. His sister Janelle, 29, is a lawyer who lives in Barbados. She is travelling to join her family in the aftermath of the tragedy. While Mr Clarke Sr, a diesel technician at Bermuda Motors, understands why his wife wants to return to Barbados, he said it is not practical because of his job and pension in Bermuda. “I don't like what's taking place here but I can't really run from something because I don't know my future. All I would like things to do is change,” he said.“All I can do is pray and hope that things will change.”Police officers visited the family yesterday, and told them it is a “waiting game” for more news. Mrs Clarke said no arrests had been made by yesterday afternoon and officers had not shared any possible motives.“I'm praying and hoping. I would like answers,” she said. The family is planning a funeral for the weekend, with details to be announced.
