Webber leads Bermuda in Cup romp
Bermuda's World Cup rugby campaign received a tremendous lift with this emphatic 52-6 drubbing of Trinidad in a round two qualifier at National Sports Club yesterday afternoon.
Fly half Ross Webber accounted for 22 of his team's tally with a try, a penalty and seven conversions.
"I was very pleased with my goal kicking,'' he said afterwards. "It started to come together today and I am also glad that I was able to run a bit as well. I was disappointed with a couple of my kicks to the line but other than that I am pleased with the way I played.'' From the opening kick-off, Bermuda stamped their authority on the game and Webber kicked a penalty to put his team 3-0 ahead with only two minutes gone.
Trinidad pulled level in the 18th minute through a Mickey Browner penalty, but scrum half Gareth Davies then put the local side ahead for good when he went over after a five yard scrum on the right side of the field.
With Webber's conversion, Bermuda were now 10-3 ahead. And in the 34th minute, Browner was again on hand to boost his team's score by three points with a penalty to ensure a respectable 10-6 tally at the half.
Two minutes after the interval, Bermuda skipper Alvin Harvey's acrobatic try under the posts gave his side the psychological edge and 17-6 breathing space to build on. Scott Correia bungled the simplest of chances far on the left, but Bobby Hurdle made no mistake from close range with a converted try three minutes later.
Bermuda were now ahead 24-6 and growing in confidence with each passing second.
Trinidad could find no way to penetrate a tight defence and found themselves further behind when number eight Patrick Cooper went to the blind side after a scrum some five yards out with 57 minutes gone. Solid forward pressure from the Bermuda pack was rewarded seven minutes later when Cooper scored his second try of the match under the posts after he picked up the ball from the scrum and dropped over the line.
Trinidad were now behind 38-6 and unable to put together any semblance of an offence.
And Webber and full back Jonathan Cassidy increased Bermuda's lead with one converted try each to end the rout.
Trinidad coach Gregory Rousseau was full of praise for Bermuda's performance.
"We were comprehensively beaten by a better team. Congratulations go to Bermuda,'' he said.
Bermuda skipper Harvey was elated with his team's performance.
"We started slowly and got into our groove about half-way through the first half,'' he said. "We missed a couple of tries because our passing let us down.
"But this win is a big confidence builder and the guys are keen to build upon it. We will prepare for Chile. They will be stronger and fitter than Trinidad but we look forward to it.
