New championship games set for top two
The first and second-place teams in the Premier and First Divisions will play each other in two championship matches in the two weekends after Cup Match.
The One Communications First Division Championship Cup will be played on the Sunday after Cup Match, August 5, at St John’s Field between champions Cleveland and runners-up Flatts. The Premier Division match on August 12 at Wellington Oval will be between champions Southampton Rangers and St David’s who finished second.
Each game will involve new trophies, cash outlay for teams and prize money for the Man of the Match.
“We are very pleased to be able to add these additional cup competitions into the end of the 50-over schedule this year,” said Lloyd Smith, president of the Bermuda Cricket Board.
“It’s been such a pleasure to be involved with One Communications, as one of our major sponsors for senior cricket in Bermuda. We look forward to growing together as we improve our domestic cricket and communities.”
Brian Lonergan, chief commercial officer of One Communications, said: “One Communications has established a long and successful partnership with the BCB. The implementation of these two new Championship Cups is a natural extension of our continued involvement in supporting communities through our clubs and the sport of cricket.
“I look forward to two outstanding games of cricket in a fun and safe environment.”
The Bermuda Cricket Board confirmed yesterday that the T20 tournament, which was scheduled to start next weekend, will still go ahead “but with revised dates”.
The tournament will now start after the Championship Cup matches.
The T20 tournament was in the original BCB schedule and set to conclude on September 8 and 9, the T20 Festival Games weekend. That tournament will now start on August 19 and conclude on September 16. The Champion of Champions competition will also take place between the three counties champions, on the weekend of September 22, 23.
Meanwhile, Flatts will get a final chance to clinch promotion to the One 50 Overs Premier Division when they meet Western Stars in the play-off match at PHC Field tomorrow.
Flatts, who were knocked out of first place and denied automatic promotion when they lost to Willow Cuts last weekend, are battling against the odds in the play-off match for the second straight year.
They lost to Somerset by six wickets in last year’s contest at Sea Breeze Oval and must do it all over again against Stars, who finished second from bottom in the top flight.
No First Division team have won promotion through the play-offs, going back to 2012, with Cleveland winning three times against Stars (twice) and St George’s.
