Bermuda enjoy most successful showing

Preparing for action: Bermuda's Drew Jenkins, who scored 13 goals at the FIL Men's Lacrosse World Championships in Israel, gets resdy for their game against Puerto Rico

The Bermuda lacrosse team enjoyed their most successful showing in an international competition at the FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championships in Israel.

They finished the Championships with a record of five wins and three defeats, including resounding wins over Croatia, Peru, Taiwan and Luxembourg.

The five victories surpass the three wins and two defeats they recorded at the ILF Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships in British Columbia, Canada, in 2008.

Bobby Walker was Bermuda’s top scorer in Israel with 16 goals, Drew Jenkins scored 13, Armand Wilson notched 12, and Cole Rance found the net ten times. Also included in the squad were youngsters Kelan Duff and MacGuyver Hay, who have committed to play at the University of Maryland and Fairleigh Dickinson University, respectively.

Meanwhile Josiah Greve, who plays professionally for the Ohio Machine in the Major League Lacrosse, led all defenders in the Bronze Division with 37 ground balls.

The World Championships hosted 46 nations and served as a platform for Bermuda to promote itself as a lacrosse destination for college and international teams looking to train in a warmer environment during the winter.

The regional qualifiers for the 2022 World Championships will be held in the next three years, with Bermuda expected to be in the conversation to host the Americas Regional Qualifiers. Bermuda is also in discussions with the Federation of International Lacrosse to compete in the 2020 Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships in Ireland and to potentially host the 2024 tournament.
