An $80 million renovation of 9 Beaches remains on the cards, employees of the Sandys hotel insist.A visit to the Daniel’s Head resort found the property slightly overgrown and the majority of buildings closed, with no evidence of construction.Hotelier David Dodwell won the lease to the site in 2004. It closed for multimillion dollar renovations in 2010.Mr Dodwell declined to comment on when the property would reopen however the hotel’s website states it is expected to do so next summer.In the meantime the premises are maintained by a few workers and a manager who live there full-time while waiting for construction to start.General manager Robin Gilbert said: “We try and keep it as tidy as possible. We’re just keeping it habitable. It’s a bit overgrown, but it’s going to be a building site soon.”The renovations are due to begin “in the near future”, he added. He said that an electric fence protected the area from squatters. “It’s never been an issue, we’ve never had a problem with that,” Mr Gilbert said. “Most of our rooms are out on the point, and we have a good relationship with the farmers near us.“The farmer has put his sheep out there and put up an electric fence to keep the sheep in, which tends to keep people out as well.”The resort has been closed for renovations since May 2010.The project was delayed due to problems with leasing, which have since been ironed out.As with last summer, the main beach was open for public use this year, with an independent entrepreneur allowed to operate a concession stand there.Mr Gilbert said he understood the man was wrapping up his business in the next few days as the summer season comes to a close.
