Alleged burglar claims no memory of jumping off roof
A Pembroke man who allegedly received facial injuries after jumping off a roof to escape from police, yesterday claimed he couldn’t remember what happened.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said Devario Whitter was chased by officers after he was caught in the middle of a robbery of a Court Street store.The 29-year-old Curving Avenue resident denied stealing $720 in cash and $1,240 worth of shoes in Friday’s incidentHe appeared in Magistrates’ Court with a towel covering part of his face, and was asked by Senior Magistrate Archie Warner to take it off.Bruises and scrapes on the right side of his face were visible.When the charge was put to him by Mr Warner, Mr Whitter replied: “I don’t remember. I’m all messed up. I have a broken eye socket, a broken nose. I woke up in the hospital 14 or 15 hours later.”Mr Warner then recorded a not guilty plea, stating that he must do so if the defendant cannot remember the incident.Mr Mahoney said Mr Whitter was discovered in a storage room by a store employee, filling a black bag with shoes.When the employee asked what he was doing, Mr Whitter allegedly said, “I’m robbing the place.”The employee chased Mr Whitter out of the building and he escaped over a wall with the bag of shoes.Police officers spotted the defendant on Victoria Street carrying the black bag and proceeded to chase him.A police spokesman reported on Friday that an alleged burglar fell off a building onto his face after he stole items from a Court Street business.The officers discovered “a quantity of cash and other undisclosed items” on him.Mr Whitter was remanded into custody and a trial date set for November 14.
