Two-year road ban and $3,000 fine for multi-offence driver
A St George’s man accumulated $3,000 in fines for traffic offences, including several committed during a police chase around the City of Hamilton.Deshun Dill, 25, pleaded guilty to six charges in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, racking up 33 points, numerous fines and a two-year driving ban.Crown counsel Nicole Smith said Dill was spotted by police driving south along Queen Street against the flow of traffic at 1.25am last October 1. He then turned onto Front Street, again heading against traffic, and failed to stop at a red light.Police used their siren and emergency lights to signal Dill to pull over. Instead he led them on a chase through Hamilton. He slammed on his brakes several times, forcing the officers to swerve and then crash into the back of his motorcycle. Dill eventually escaped by riding through the rear of City Hall on a path only wide enough for the bike. The officers later found him walking along Wesley Street. They noticed Dill smelled of alcohol and asked if he had been drinking, to which Dill said he had had two drinks earlier in the evening. For that incident, Dill was fined $500 for driving while disqualified, $300 for failing to stop for police, $500 for driving dangerously and $1,500 for driving while impaired by alcohol.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner warned him that the court takes driving while disqualified very seriously, and a second such offence could land him in jail.Dill also faced two charges of driving without a licence from September 2011. He received a $100 fine for each of those offences, bringing the total he was ordered to pay, to $3,000.
