Police issue counterfeit cash warning

Police were called after a customer attempted to use a fake $100 bill at a gas station.Police responded at about 1.40pm to the 24-hour Esso Tigermart on Wednesday after receiving a report that an individual tried to make a purchase with the counterfeit bill.The bill’s serial number was D/I 019625. The incident is one of a number of counterfeit sightings in recent months.A Police spokesperson said: “With an increase in the circulation of counterfeit currency recently, police would like to remind the public that it is a criminal offence to pass to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency, punishable by up to five years in prison.”Inquiries into the incident are ongoing. The police are encouraging anyone with information on the circulation of counterfeit money to contact the Financial Crime Unit by calling 295-0011.Meanwhile, a fight between two women outside of the Hamilton Post Office had to be broken up by police.Police were called to the scene after an argument escalated into a physical altercation. Both women were taken to Hamilton Police Station and later released.
