Inflation falls to 1.8%

Slight rise: The food sector saw prices rise on average 0.2 per cent in March. Among the items costing more were oranges, according to the Consumer Price Index

Bermuda’s inflation rate fell to 1.8 per cent in March. It was 2 per cent in February.

According to the latest figures reported in the Consumer Price Index bulletin, the transport and foreign travel sector saw a 0.8 per cent increase in prices, with the average cost of overseas hotels up 5.1 per cent, and airfares 1.6 per cent higher.

The food sector was 0.2 per cent higher. Among items that increased in price were eggs, up an average of 5.7 per cent, lamb legs up 5.1 per cent and oranges up 3.6 per cent.

The cost of boat repairs and maintenance was up 6.2 per cent on average, which pushed the wide-ranging education, recreation, entertainment and reading sector up 0.2 per cent.

The only other sector that recorded a change in March was tobacco and liquor, which was down 0.2 per cent as the average cost of spirits fell.

The all-items index rose to 104.3 in March. This means that the basket of goods and services that cost $100 in April 2015 now costs $104.30.

On a year-on-year basis, the transport and foreign travel sector was up 3 per cent, with the average cost of overseas hotels up 6 per cent. The tobacco and liquor sector was up 9.1 per cent, and the educations, recreation, entertainment and reading sector was up 2.2 per cent.
