Fourth Barber Shop Run set for Saturday
A Pembroke barbershop is set to continue a four-year tradition with a Barber Shop Run in Hamilton.
Ricky Spence, owner of Ricky’s Barber Shop on The Glebe Road, said the races on June 2 would provide free health screening, as it has for the last few years.
But he added he also wanted to pay tribute to Commonwealth gold medallists Flora Duffy and Clarance “Nicky” Saunders.
Mr Spence said: “A lot of us pay more attention to what people are doing in America or England, what their players and athletes are doing, but we don’t acknowledge our own people.
“We need to lift our people up, because there are a lot of talented people here in Bermuda.”
Mr Spence said he started the event as an opportunity to offer healthcare advice to the public at the barber shop.
Mr Spence said: “The event is all about giving back. That’s the whole thing. I work in a barbershop and I’m used to talking to people who don’t have any insurance.
“I have talked to people who don’t want to go to the doctor because they don’t have any insurance.
“High blood pressure has been a killer, but I wanted to give some hope.”
Mr Spence said nurses from the Department of Health would be in the shop from 10am to 2pm to give free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.
The traditional 100 yard dash down Angle Street will feature multiple age categories and prizes donated by insurance firm Argus.
