A Bermuda teen stabbed to death in the Britain is being remembered as a “happy-go-lucky kid” and a hardworking footballer by his former coach.

Corey Hill said the news of Samuel Baker’s death had come as a “complete surprise”.

The 15-year-old was killed in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, last week.

Mr Hill said learning of his former player’s death had “sent a shock wave through my body”.

He added: “I shed a little tear. My son broke down as well.”

Mr Hill said that Samuel and his own son had played football together while the youngster had lived in Bermuda.

He said that he coached Samuel at the under-8 and under -10 levels through the Hamilton Parish youth football programme up until he moved overseas “about four years ago”.

Mr Hill said that he had lost contact with him after the move.

He described Samuel as a hard-working and passionate player on the pitch. He added: “Sometimes he would play in the defence for me. If we needed to save a game, I would put him in goal. He always did whatever job I asked him to do. He had a lot of fight in him. He was one of our stronger players. He was very reliable on the field.”

Off the field, Mr Hill described Samuel as a “happy-go-lucky kid” from the Cottage Hill community. He added: “Everybody knew Sam. He was the kid who was riding his bike through the neighbourhood.”

British newspaper The Star reported yesterday that another 15-year-old boy had been charged with murder in connection with Samuel’s death.

The suspect’s name has not been released by police. The Bermuda Police Service are working with British authorities.
