Crime Stoppers Bermuda has launched a new campaign to boost public awareness of how it handles anonymous tips.

It starts with a visit to Bermuda by a Crime Stoppers team from Miami-Dade, who will appear on local media December 2 and 3.

Noting that many Bermudians are unaware of how Crime Stoppers works, Chairman John Drew said: “Our aim is to reach out to the entire Island and explain the process.”

Mr Drew cited a 52 percent rise in calls to the group so far this year, compared with the whole of 2009.

The visiting team handles all Bermuda calls, along with tip-offs from Miami and greater Florida plus several Caribbean islands. Mr Drew said the group would be explaining the confidentiality of the service

He added that every household in Bermuda would be posted a brochure with fridge magnet explaining Crime Stoppers and giving contact details.

The campaign, with funding from the Concerned Business Community Group, emphasises the anonymity of Crime Stoppers for anyone submitting information on criminal activities.

The group is also joining with Neighbourhood Watch for new road signs, encouraging community involvement in safety.
